Legal:- Politically Tenerife is within the European Union as an autonomous region of Spain, however non of the Canary Islands are considered to be within the European Union for the purposes of VAT and duty on goods. Goods and services on any of the Canary Islands do not attract Spanish IVA (VAT), however there is a local tax levied (IGIC) at around 5%. This makes goods (tobacco, alcohol etc) from Tenerife significantly cheaper, so strict limits are in place on the quantity that can be legally brought back to the UK. When you leave baggage reclaim, proceed via either the GREEN channel (if you have nothing to declare) or the RED channel if you have anything to declare or are in any doubt about the goods or quantity of goods you intend to bring into the country.
